The Planet Geek Home Theater

What We Design & Install

Planet Geek designs and installs custom home theater systems that transform spare rooms, bonus rooms, basements, and living spaces into immersive entertainment environments. We handle every layer of the project — from room planning and acoustic design to structured cabling, equipment selection, speaker installation, projector mounting, and final calibration.

Whether you want a casual media room upgrade with a premium TV and soundbar, or a purpose-built dedicated cinema with a 4K laser projector, 150-inch screen, Dolby Atmos surround sound, acoustic panels, blackout treatments, and theater seating — we build it right and make it simple to use. As a licensed Arizona low-voltage contractor (ROC #357379), we bring the same infrastructure expertise to your theater that we bring to security, networking, and smart home projects.

Theater Types

From Media Rooms to Dedicated Cinemas

Dedicated Home Theaters

A dedicated home theater is a purpose-built room designed from the ground up for the cinematic experience. We start with the room itself — controlling light with blackout shades or windowless design, treating acoustics with absorption and diffusion panels, and optimizing the layout for ideal screen size, viewing distance, and speaker placement. A 4K or 8K laser projector throws a 100–150+ inch image onto an acoustically transparent or fixed-frame screen. Dolby Atmos surround sound with in-ceiling height channels, in-wall surrounds, and dedicated subwoofers fills the room with three-dimensional audio. Theater-grade seating, dimmable rope lighting, and smart control via a single remote or app complete the experience.

Media Room Upgrades

Not every home has a spare room to dedicate. A media room upgrade transforms your existing living room, family room, or bonus room into a high-performance entertainment space without the full construction commitment. We mount a premium 75–98-inch TV or ultra-short-throw projector, install in-ceiling or on-wall surround speakers for Dolby Atmos, add a wireless subwoofer, and connect everything to a quality AV receiver or soundbar system. Clean cable management, hidden components, and smart control make it look and feel effortless.

Outdoor Theaters & Entertainment

Arizona’s climate makes outdoor entertainment a year-round opportunity. We install weather-rated outdoor TVs (like the Samsung Terrace), outdoor projector setups with motorized screens, and landscape-integrated speaker systems that deliver rich audio across your patio, pool deck, or backyard. Outdoor theaters integrate with your lighting, shading, and smart home system for one-touch movie night scenes.

Gaming & Simulation Rooms

For serious gamers, we build low-latency entertainment rooms with high-refresh-rate displays (120Hz+ at 4K), gaming-optimized projectors with VRR and ALLM support, immersive surround sound tuned for spatial audio, and dedicated network drops for lag-free online play. Whether you’re racing, flying, or competing — your setup performs at the level you play.

System Components

What Goes Into a Home Theater

Display — Projectors & Screens

We install 4K and 8K laser projectors from leading manufacturers, paired with fixed-frame, motorized, or acoustically transparent projection screens sized from 100 to 200+ inches. For media rooms, we mount premium 75–98-inch OLED and QLED TVs. Ultra-short-throw (UST) laser projectors offer massive screen sizes from just inches away from the wall — ideal for rooms where ceiling mounting isn’t practical. We calibrate every display for accurate color, contrast, and motion.

Audio — Dolby Atmos Surround Sound

Dolby Atmos is the gold standard for immersive home theater audio. We design and install Atmos systems from 5.1.2 (entry-level height channels) to full 7.2.4 and 9.2.6 configurations with in-ceiling height speakers, in-wall surrounds, floor-standing or bookshelf front channels, and dual subwoofers. Every speaker is positioned, angled, and calibrated to your room’s specific dimensions and acoustic properties. We also install high-performance soundbar-based systems like the Sony BRAVIA Theater and Sonos Arc for media room applications.

AV Receivers & Processing

The AV receiver is the brain of your home theater — decoding Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio, switching HDMI sources, and powering your speakers. We install receivers from Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, and Anthem, selecting the right model based on your channel count, power requirements, room size, and source devices. For high-end builds, we deploy dedicated audio processors with external amplification for reference-grade performance.

Streaming & Source Devices

We integrate Apple TV 4K, NVIDIA Shield, Roku Ultra, and dedicated media servers into your theater system — giving you instant access to every streaming platform in 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos audio. For the ultimate library experience, we install Kaleidescape movie servers that store lossless 4K Blu-ray quality content with instant playback and no buffering. Gaming consoles, cable boxes, and turntables all integrate seamlessly.

Acoustic Treatment & Room Design

Sound quality is only as good as the room it’s in. We install acoustic absorption panels to control reflections, bass traps to tame low-frequency buildup in corners, and diffusion panels to create a natural, spacious soundstage. For dedicated theaters, we design the room layout from scratch — optimizing screen placement, speaker angles, seating positions, and riser platforms for tiered seating. Blackout treatments, dimmable LED lighting, and star-ceiling fiber optics complete the atmosphere.

Smart Control & Automation

Your home theater should be effortless to use. We program one-touch scenes that dim the lights, lower the screen, power on the projector, set the receiver to the right input, and start your movie — all from a single button press on a universal remote, wall keypad, in-app control, or voice command. Theater systems integrate with Savant, Alarm.com, and other smart home platforms for whole-home automation.

Infrastructure

The Wiring Behind the Experience

A home theater is only as reliable as the infrastructure behind the walls. Planet Geek installs all structured cabling and low-voltage wiring for your theater project, including HDMI 2.1 runs (or fiber HDMI for long distances), 14/4 and 12/4 speaker wire to every in-wall and in-ceiling speaker location, Cat6 Ethernet for streaming devices and network-connected components, conduit pathways for future-proof cable access, and dedicated 20-amp circuits for AV equipment.

All cable runs are labeled, terminated, tested, and routed cleanly through walls and ceilings. For new construction, we work with your builder during rough-in to pre-wire every speaker, display, and equipment location. For existing homes, we use attic access, fishing techniques, and low-impact routing to get cable where it needs to go without tearing up your walls.

How It Works

Our Home Theater Installation Process

1. Consultation & Room Evaluation

We visit your home, evaluate the room (dimensions, windows, ambient light, existing wiring, structural considerations), and discuss your goals — what you watch, how you listen, how many seats, and what level of immersion you’re after. We bring reference photos and system examples to help you visualize the possibilities.

2. System Design & Proposal

We design your complete theater system — display, audio, sources, control, acoustic treatment, seating layout, and cabling plan. You receive a detailed proposal showing every component, where it goes, and what it costs. No ambiguity, no surprise charges.

3. Structured Cabling & Rough-In

We run all speaker wire, HDMI, network cable, and control wiring through walls and ceilings. For new construction or remodels, this happens during the rough-in phase. For finished rooms, we fish cable through existing wall cavities and attic space with minimal disruption.

4. Equipment Installation

We mount your projector or TV, install every speaker in its designated location, rack-mount your AV receiver and source components, connect all cabling, and mount your projection screen. Everything is secured, labeled, and organized.

5. Calibration & Programming

We run room correction software (Audyssey, Dirac, ARC) on your AV receiver to optimize speaker levels, distances, and EQ for your specific room acoustics. We calibrate your display for accurate color, contrast, and HDR performance. Then we program your control system — universal remote, app, or wall keypad — so everything works with a single button press.

6. Walkthrough & Ongoing Support

We walk you through every feature of your new system, show you how to use the remote and app, and make sure everyone in the household is comfortable operating it. Then we’re a phone call away for firmware updates, calibration tweaks, equipment additions, and expansion projects.
